Moka Pot

I’ve been making my daily coffee with an AeroPress every day for the last decade, and they are as great and as easy to use as everyone says.

However, getting restless I wanted to try something a little different so I bought myself a Bialetti Moka Express, and have been giving it a trail this week.

Moka Pot

The Moka Express pot itself is a fascinatingly simple in how it brews, and the Bialetti has become an iconic Italian design. Coffee is brewed by heating the water in the bottom section of the pot, then using the pressure of the boiling water to force it up through a layer of ground coffee into the funnelled container at the top.

So far, I’ve been following James Hoffmann’s technique to sadly mixed results. I’m still in the trial and error stage, particularly when judging at what point to turn down the heat on my stove, but so far the process is slower and more fiddly for a cup of coffee that is no better (and sometimes worse) than what I get out of the AeroPress.

But, I shall persevere and report back in due course.
